Margaret in WWI
Like many, when World War I begins Margaret feels the need to help. She does so in a number of ways:

She offers her financial support to help pay for nurses and medical supplies, even offering to become a nurse herself.

While not used, she offered her Newport cottage to the Newport Chapter of the American Red Cross for use as a Navy hospital.

She helped teach blinded soldiers to read Braille using the works of Mark Twain.

She helped support a group known as C.A.R.D., which raised funds to rebuild villages in northern France affected by the war. She was also a part of the Blerancourt Museum, which grew out of the works of C.A.R.D.

After the war, she was nominated for a French Legion of Honor medal which she received in 1932, just before her death.
