Docents

For most of our 60,000+ visitors each year, our docents are the face of the Museum. Therefore, docents go through more training than any other of our volunteer groups. In addition to the new volunteer training that all volunteers complete, docents-in-training:

  • Complete 4 shifts as a Gallery Guide

  • Submit an outline of your tour to staff for approval

  • Complete a paired shift (3 tours) assisting an experienced docent and presenting one or two stories about the Browns during each tour

  • Present your tour for a staff member

  • Complete a second paired shift with an experienced docent. This time, the experienced docent is there only for support while the new docent conducts all of the tours.

Docents must commit to covering three tour shifts each month if they lead on weekdays, and two shifts each month if leading tours on weekends.

Tours should be engaging and bring the visitors' experiences to bear on what they see in the house and hear from our our docents. With that in mind, docents should focus their tours on being not only informative, but also an experience where guests are participants. Below are some documents to assist docents-in-training when creating their tour.
